With my 50th film ‘Detective Thikshan’, the audience will not only be entertained but also undergo a thrilling experience: Priyanka Upendra

Priyanka Trivedi from Bengal is a popular heroine who acted in many Bengali, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada films from late 90s to early 2000s. She became Priyanka Upendra after marrying popular Kannada star hero and director Upendra, even after marriage she got many offers and made movies selectively choosing the characters she liked. But he was never away from movies. Over the years, he has been entertaining the audience with his impressive performances in various roles.

Now he will come to us with his 50th film as ‘Detective Thikshan’. The makers have released an impressive first look. This first look of Priyanka Upendra holding a gun in a typical action pose and the title are particularly impressive. The film is directed by Trivikram Raghu and produced by Guttamuni Prasanna from Polkala Chittoor Andhra Pradesh, G Muni Venkat Charan (Event Links, Bangalore) and Purushottam B (SDC).

I am fortunate to have had such a long career. I was born in Bengal but grew up in Singapore, US. Elected as Miss Calcutta at the age of 16, I started my film journey with a Bengali film. From 1999 to 2003 I acted in many films in Bengali, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Odia films. I have done films with many big stars. I acted with Vijay Kant sir, Vikram sir, Prabhudeva and Upendra. My first Bengali film Hatat Brishti was directed by National Award winning director Basu Chatterjee. The film recently completed 25 years. I have learned a lot in the early days of my career. Then marriage, children… life took a turn like this. I am very happy with my family life. I never thought I would act again. But slowly I started getting offers. Many actresses who married superstars at that time did not act again. On the one hand, there was fan pressure, whether the audience would accept if it was done with other heroes, what kind of roles would they like to see… there were many factors. Deciding to recast between these is a big deal. These days those problems are largely reduced. I was able to make a distinction for myself. In the current OTT wave, we got a chance to present various characters. In this journey I have been learning from everyone who has worked in all languages industries.

The first thing I did when I shifted to Bangalore was to learn Kannada. There are many emotional experiences after the birth of children. A maturity also came with the birth of children. It was a whole new life. I did not act in Upendra Gari’s direction. But we watch a lot of movies and talk about movies. He is crazy about Kannada literature. I learned a lot from him in that regard. It helped me to improve as an actor. I have traveled to many places in Karnataka. Because of that, I learned a lot about Karnataka culture and how to work with new people and new ideas. But I could learn a lot from Upendra.

Even after the birth of children, I got offers in 8 Bengali films. Many people do not know this. The fact that I got married and became a mother did not seem to be an obstacle for the directors and producers who gave those offers. But I could not go to Kolkata with the children and work. So I decided to make pictures here. I acted with Upendra in the remake of Bollywood movie Aitraj Smriti. I did Crazy Star with Ravichandran sir. The film Mummy, in which I played the lead role, was a good success at the box office. That film proved to me that there is a market for female oriented films. After that movie, there were many offers of such horror movies. But he didn’t agree to do the same. Later I did films like Second Half and Devaki. When I read a script, I think about whether I can enjoy it and watch it with my kids when it’s made into a movie. Also it should be adapted to current conditions. I go with my gut feeling if it feels good to me. Who is producing, can they bring quality output… I will take a decision after thinking about all this.

– I have a lot of freedom in that regard. Neither of us put any restrictions on what each other should or shouldn’t do. We will discuss. He gives his opinion and leaves the decision to me. I am the same in his case. But the final decision regarding my films will be mine. There is a big platform called fans, they have unlimited love and admiration. There is pressure not to disappoint them. I like strong roles, message oriented. I like to act in roles that inspire women and children. Many women on social media see me in a powerful role and say that they don’t feel it. I love that and am proud to be able to inspire them.
